Designing a Gallery Wall That Actually Hangs Together
Gallery walls don't fail because people hang too much. They fail because nothing on the wall is in charge. Pick an anchor, build around it, and the rest is spacing. Here's the whole method, with the exact sizes for the arrangement our customers build most.
Pick the anchor first
Every wall that works has one piece the others answer to. Make it the largest, hang it with its center at 57 to 60 inches, and place it first. Sunbathing in Capri anchors a warm room; Backstage at VS anchors a glamorous one.
The five-piece wall, with real sizes
The most popular arrangement from our black and white collection is five pieces: a Centerpiece (56.5" x 39.5" framed) with two Large pieces (31.5" x 22.5" framed) on each side, even spacing throughout, and the center of the whole arrangement at eye level. Choose the layout on the floor, not the wall
Lay everything out on the floor and live with it for a day before a single nail goes in. A symmetric grid suits formal rooms. An organic cluster suits relaxed ones. A straight line at consistent height suits hallways and stairs. Whatever you choose, keep the gaps even; consistent spacing is what makes mixed sizes look intentional.
Dining rooms take gallery walls best
People sit still in a dining room and actually look at the walls, so keep the theme tight there: all vintage, or all black and white, in a single frame finish. Hallways want a matched series more than a cluster: one row, same size, same frame.
Mixing in personal photos
Family photos and travel shots belong on a gallery wall. Convert them to black and white and they'll sit comfortably next to fine art photography instead of fighting it. Let the art carry the scale and the personal pieces fill the spaces between.
Frames and hanging
One frame finish makes a wall formal; two makes it relaxed; more than two makes it noisy. Our four solid wood finishes (White, Black, Natural Wood, Dark Wood) mix cleanly because the profile is identical. Hanging is the easy part: the brackets are already secured to the back of every piece, and their grooves let each piece slide sideways for alignment, which is exactly what a grid needs. You'll use a hammer and nothing else.
