Large Western Wall Art Without the Kitsch: A Buyer's Guide
Western decor has a kitsch problem. Horseshoes on the wall, wagon-wheel furniture, a mass-produced sunset. But the American West also produced some of the most striking imagery in photography, and a single large piece of it does what a room of accessories can't: it takes the West seriously.
Where western art comes from
The genre has real roots. Charles M. Russell painted the West he'd worked as a cowboy. Frederic Remington gave the frontier its motion. N.C. Wyeth gave it drama. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City holds the deep history if you want it. Photography inherited all of it: the light, the distance, the self-reliance, minus the varnish.
The two we'd hang first
Cowboys at Dawn is the serious one: riders in first light, all atmosphere. Hang it large above a fireplace or sofa and let it anchor the room. Cowboy Cadillac is the irreverent one, the piece for a den, office, or bar wall that wants a story. There's more where those came from in the Western collection.
Black and white de-kitsches everything
If your room walks the line between western and modern, monochrome is the answer. Stripped of color, a western photograph reads as fine art photography first and theme second, which is why black and white western pieces sit comfortably in city apartments. The crossover lives in our Black and White collection.
Making it sit right in the room
Western photography pairs with what the West is made of: wood, leather, wool, iron. Keep to earth tones, choose one big piece over many small ones, and go easy on the accessories. If the art carries the theme, the room doesn't have to. Over a fireplace or sofa that usually means Extra Large or Centerpiece; the numbers are in our sizing guide.
The frame call
Dark Wood is the natural match for warm, rustic rooms. Black turns a western piece modern. White is the sleeper pick for monochrome western photography on pale walls. All four finishes are solid wood, 1 1/8 inches thick.
The practical part
Preview any piece on your wall in AR before you buy.
