Framed Photography: How to Choose Wall Art That Lasts

Most framed photography disappoints in person. The image is a crop of a compressed file, the frame is hollow, and the front is a sheet of glass throwing reflections at the room. This guide is about avoiding all three, whether you buy from us or not.

Here's what actually matters, in the order it matters.

Start with the image, not the frame

A frame can't rescue a weak file. We work directly with the owners of the image archives and print from the original high-resolution files, which is why a piece like Sunbathing in Capri holds its detail at 27 inches wide and well beyond. The frame call

Our frames come in four solid wood finishes: White, Black, Natural Wood, and Dark Wood, each 1 1/8 inches thick. Black is the safe call for most rooms and nearly all black and white photography. White and Natural Wood keep coastal and bright rooms airy. Dark Wood earns its place with warm palettes, leather, and vintage imagery. If you're torn, match the frame to the floor or the largest wood piece in the room, not to the image.

Get the size right

The quickest rule: above furniture, the piece should span about two thirds of the furniture's width. There are seven framed formats, from Small (16.5" x 12.5") through Large (31.5" x 22.5") and Extra Large (44.5" x 31.5") up to Centerpiece, Renaissance and Masterpiece (85" x 60"). What the build should include
