A historical photograph does something no other decor can: it puts an actual moment on your wall. Not a mood, not a color story, a thing that happened, with the light of the day it happened in. Decorating with these images well comes down to choosing moments that still speak and printing them in a way that does the negative justice.

Where the images come from

The deepest well we print from is the Bettmann Archive: more than 11 million negatives and prints spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, one of the most significant historical photo collections in the world. We work directly with the owners of the image archives and print from the original high-resolution files, which is the difference between hanging history and hanging a photocopy of it. The exhibition-worthy context is out there too; the Defining Eye survey of 20th-century women photographers is a good afternoon.

Which moments hold a wall

The ones that keep working share a quality: you can stand in front of them twice a day and still find something. Penthouse with Marilyn is glamour as a historical document. Elvis is charisma preserved in silver. Monaco Grand Prix 1973 is speed with a date on it. Browse the Vintage and Icons collections and pick the moment your room should keep.

Old images, new build

A century-old image needs modern protection more than any other piece you'll hang. Ours get it as standard: 100% acid-free archival matte paper, pigment inks, and premium acrylic that blocks 99.9% of UV, so a bright room doesn't do in ten years what a century couldn't. The image runs edge to edge on our floating pedestal mount, in a solid wood frame made by hand at our facilities in Oregon and Florida, with a certificate of authenticity and a 10-year guarantee.

Placing history in a modern room

Historical photographs like company: they anchor gallery walls beautifully, especially all-monochrome ones (the five-piece recipe with exact sizes is in our gallery wall guide). Solo, they want eye level and a little breathing room, in Black or Dark Wood frames that let the era speak. Preview any piece on your wall in AR before you buy; framed pieces arrive ready to hang, with free US shipping.

Start in Vintage. The past is well stocked.
